Letter to Parliamentarians: Iran Accountability Week

Posted on May 23, 2013

Dear Parliamentarian,

I write to invite you to join in “Iran Accountability Week”, which seeks to sound the alarm on Iran’s massive domestic repression, nuclear threat, state-sponsorship of international terrorism, and incitement to genocide.

Iran Accountability Week could not have come at a more propitious time. As I write, the Iranian regime is engaged in a massive domestic crackdown in the run-up to the Presidential elections, including the unjust imprisonment of women, journalists, ethnic and religious leaders, human rights defenders, students, trade union leaders – in a word, the leading members of Iranian civil society. It also coincides with the 5th anniversary of the imprisonment of the Baha’i leadership in Iran; the 25th anniversary of the 1988 massacre of Iranian political dissidents; and the recent report of 2,600 political prisoners in Iran, many under threat of execution.

Events for this week include:

  • A press conference on Monday May 27th (1:15pm, Charles Lynch Room) launching the Iranian Political Prisoner Global Advocacy Project, pairing Canadian Parliamentarians with Iranian political prisoners on whose behalf MPs will advocate;
  • Hearings before the Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on International Human Rights on both Tuesday (May 28th) and Thursday (May 30th) with experts on the Iranian four-fold threat;
  • Panel discussions with experts on Tuesday (human rights in Iran) and Thursday evenings (the Iranian nuclear and terrorist threat) for Parliamentarians and the public to learn more about these aspects of the Iranian threat and what Canada can do.

Specific invitations for the panel sessions will be forthcoming. Below please find the tentative schedule for the week.

I look forward to your participation in Iran Accountability Week and thank you for your attention to this matter.

Sincerely,

Irwin Cotler

Co-Chair (with US Sen. Mark Kirk) – Inter-Parliamentary Group for Human Rights in Iran
