ON THE ANNIVERSARY OF NEDA’S DEATH, THE RESPONSIBILITY TO PREVENT COALITION CALLS ON THE INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY – INCLUDING THE G8 AND G20 – TO HOLD AHMADINEJAD’S IRAN TO ACCOUNT

Release of International Report endorsed by a consortium of international law scholars, human rights advocates, former government leaders, parliamentarians and Iranian activists

On the anniversary of the murder of Neda Agha-Soltan – who emerged as an iconic symbol of the massive domestic repression in Iran – some 100 leading scholars, jurists, former government leaders, parliamentarians and Iranian activists have endorsed  a 200-page International Report organised around two major themes: First, Iran’s emergence as a clear and present danger to international peace and security as well as – increasingly and alarmingly so – to its own people; and second, recommendations for action by the international community – including those convening in Canada for the G8 and G20 – to combat and prevent the Iranian threat. It was released by Prof. Irwin Cotler, MP on behalf of the Responsibility to Prevent Coalition, who was joined by Iranian-Canadian signatories Caspian Makan and human rights activist Nazanin Afshin-Jam.

Prof. Cotler, who Chairs the Coalition remarked: “Let there be no mistake about it. As the Report demonstrates, Iran is in standing violation of international legal prohibitions against the development and proliferation of nuclear weapons; Iran has already committed the crime of incitement to genocide prohibited under the Genocide Convention; Iran is a leading state sponsor of international terrorism; and Iran is engaged in widespread and systematic violations of the rights of its own people”.

Caspian Makan – Neda’s fiancé – and himself former political prisoner and Board Member of the Confederation of Iranian Students, that “The most important responsibility I have is to continue on Neda’s path. Her path is liberty and striving for human rights. That path is not just for Iranian people, but for all freedom-loving people”.

Nazanin Afshin-Jam, President and Co-Founder of Stop Child Executions, added: “Human rights in Iran have continuously deteriorated especially since the fraudulent Presidential elections last June. We mustn’t forget Neda and the 70 million other people in Iran that live in a police-state. They have not relented in their struggle for freedom and are counting on the international community to stand in solidarity with them”.

The report contains the most comprehensive, authoritative, and up-to-date witness testimony and documentary evidence on the Iranian threat. It also contains an 18-point recommended roadmap of action for the international community – including the G8 and the G20 – to bring Ahmadinejad’s Iran to account.

The Responsibility to Prevent Coalition includes: Nobel Peace Laureate Prof. Elie Wiesel; Mideast scholar Fouad Ajami, Amb. Mark Wallace, President of United Against a Nuclear Iran; José María Aznar, former Prime Minister of Spain; the Rt. Hon. Denis McShane, MP (UK) and former Government Minister; Salih Mahmoud Osman, MP (Sudan); and Saad Eddin Ibrahim, leading democracy and human rights advocate in the Arab world.
