MP Irwin Cotler, Liberal Critic for Rights and Freedoms and International Justice, today issued the following statement about the Liberal Plan for Fairness:
“As a former professor of human rights law, I am proud of the Liberal plan to make the tax system fairer and to give more money to families to help them raise their children. This is part of sound economic policy anchored in Liberal principles of justice and fairness.
By asking the wealthiest Canadians to contribute a little more, we can cut taxes for the middle class by seven percent, and provide a larger, fairer, tax-free monthly child benefit to families that need it most. For example, the annual child benefit for a family of four with a household income of $90,000 would increase by $2,500.
Canadians now have two fundamentally different choices. While the Conservatives give tax breaks to the wealthiest Canadians, Liberals are offering a plan based on our fundamental values of fairness, ethics and equality of opportunity.
The Liberal Party’s priority is to strengthen those at the heart of Canada’s economy: the middle class and those working hard to join it.”
