FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
PARLIAMENTARIANS LAUNCH IRANIAN POLITICAL PRISONER GLOBAL ADVOCACY PROJECT HERALDING IRAN ACCOUNTABILITY WEEK
EFFORT PAIRS PARLIAMENTARIANS WITH IMPRISONED IRANIAN DISSIDENTS
Ottawa – May 23, 2013 – Parliamentarians from across the political spectrum will come to together to launch the Iranian Political Prisoner Global Advocacy Project on Monday, May 27th to herald the beginning of Iran Accountability Week. This effort pairs Canadian Parliamentarians with Iranian political prisoners on whose behalf the MPs and Senators will advocate.
This effort is part of a larger initiative of the Inter-Parliamentary Group for Human Rights in Iran (Irwin Cotler and US Sen. Mark Kirk, co-chairs) to sound the alarm on the massive domestic repression in Iran in the run-up to the Iranian Presidential elections.
Iran Accountability Week coincides with the 5th anniversary of the imprisonment of the Baha’i leadership in Iran; the 25th anniversary of the 1988 massacre of Iranian political dissidents; and the recent report of 2,600 political prisoners in Iran – including imprisoned women, ethnic and religious leaders, journalists, bloggers, students, trade union leaders – in a word, the leaders of Iranian civil society – many under threat of execution.
The press conference will be held on:
Date: Monday, May 27th, 2013
Time: 1:15 p.m.
Location: Charles Lynch Press Gallery
